Before the hits came the hungry years, and No Sleep Til L.A. follows Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as they found their way west. This limited edition is a zoetrope picture disc on 180-gram clear vinyl.

The story begins in 1971 with a first-ever studio session at Criteria in Miami, when Petty was fronting Mudcrutch, the Gainesville band that also featured Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. From there it moves through sessions in Tulsa and on to Los Angeles, where the Heartbreakers took shape and released their debut album in 1976.

Twelve tracks cover Petty's first eight years as a recording artist, and seven of them have never been released before. The headline discovery is Parade of Loons, a previously unheard Heartbreakers recording from 1978. Depot Street, the Mudcrutch single, returns in a fresh mix, and Up in Mississippi Tonight and Since You Said You Love Me catch a young songwriter already sharpening his craft.

Every track has been newly mixed by Ryan Ulyate from the original multitracks, so the Southern roots, the garage bite and that unmistakable drawl all come through in sharp focus.

The same music anchors the Origins 1971-1978 box set marking the band's 50th anniversary, but as a standalone zoetrope it makes a striking centrepiece for any Petty shelf.
