Todd Rundgren's Initiation is one of rock's wildest overreaches, a 1975 synth-prog epic so long it once strained a single LP, now given room to breathe across two discs.
His sixth studio album found Rundgren diving headlong into the synthesized progressive sound he had been exploring with Utopia, except this time he played and programmed most of the synthesizers himself. At over 67 minutes, the original pressing famously carried a technical note warning listeners that a worn needle would ruin the disc, and suggesting they tape it if it sounded too quiet.
Real Man opens in more familiar territory, a soaring, soulful pop song full of Rundgren's melodic smarts. Born to Synthesize leans fully into his electronic experiments, and The Death of Rock and Roll cranks the guitars back up.
Then comes A Treatise on Cosmic Fire, a sprawling instrumental suite whose titles and concept come straight from Alice A. Bailey's esoteric book of the same name, the moment where the album leaves Earth's orbit entirely and never looks back.
Brilliant, baffling and completely singular, it is a treasure for Rundgren devotees and for adventurous listeners who like their rock with a cosmic streak and a sense of humour. Few records from 1975 sound quite this bold.
