Tito Puente's Dance Mania is the sound of New York's mambo craze at full heat, and this limited Spanish import presses it on 180 gram vinyl with bonus tracks added.
Recorded in late 1957 and released by RCA Victor in 1958, the album caught Puente at the peak of his powers as bandleader, arranger and percussionist. Singer Santitos Colón handles lead vocals with smooth authority, and the orchestra features Ray Barretto on congas alongside a blazing brass and saxophone section.
From the opening "El Cayuco," the energy is irresistible. "Complicación" crackles with tight horn riffs and crisp timbales, while "3-D Mambo" and "Hong Kong Mambo" show off the orchestra's precision and swing, the kind that once kept ballrooms full until closing time.
Puente leads from behind his timbales, also adding vibraphone and marimba, and his arrangements balance Cuban rhythm with big-band jazz sophistication. It's dance music, but built with a composer's ear, every break and horn stab placed exactly where it will do the most damage.
The album has since been added to the US National Recording Registry, and decades on it remains the ideal entry point to the golden age of Latin dance music. Put it on, clear some space and see how long anyone in the room can stay seated.
