Vurias is Thron's fifth album, the German-Swiss coven trading their previous record's heavy metal grandeur for something feral enough to genuinely unsettle, on hot vinyl territory that adds saxophone and Hammond organ to blackened death metal's usual arsenal.
2023's Dust had already established the band as one of the most compelling live acts in the modern blackened metal scene, stages at Hellfest and Summer Breeze alongside Amon Amarth and Carcass, a full European run with The Spirit. This follow-up pushes the sound somewhere stranger. The classic metal influences haven't disappeared so much as receded into the background, replaced by a savage new intensity drawing on 1970s progressive rock in ways almost nobody in this genre attempts, vintage synthesizers and wailing saxophone woven directly into the blackened attack rather than sitting apart from it.
The Hunter and the Prey carries that alchemy at its most aggressive, classic riffing colliding with the record's new atmospheric layers. Ungemach (Stilles Ende) is the album's genuine centrepiece, Zingultus of Endstille lending a spectral, chilling vocal turn while Norman Lonhard's drumming gives the whole thing real weight and cohesion. Daniele Valeriani's artwork and Christoph Brandes' production at Iguana Studios frame all of it in appropriately ominous detail.
Thron aren't repeating themselves here. This is a band actively widening what blackened metal is allowed to sound like.
