Tomorrow's Modern Boxes is Thom Yorke's second solo album, a restless 2014 electronic record that first appeared as a surprise digital release before finding its way onto vinyl.
Yorke and longtime producer Nigel Godrich released it through a BitTorrent bundle, an experiment in selling music directly to fans that drew millions of downloads and plenty of debate about how artists get paid. Stanley Donwood, the visual mind behind so much of the Radiohead world, designed the artwork.
The music is spare, glitchy and quietly hypnotic. Opener "A Brain in a Bottle" twitches with skittering beats and warped synths, while "Guess Again!" sets Yorke's falsetto against heavy, lurching piano chords. "Interference" is a brief, ghostly ballad that hangs in the air like breath on glass.
At the centre sits "There Is No Ice (For My Drink)," a seven-minute pulse that builds patiently into a dark, almost danceable groove. It's the clearest sign of Yorke's love for electronic music in its most immersive form.
This 2017 vinyl edition gives the album a physical home it deserved from the start, letting its deep bass and intricate textures breathe. For fans of Radiohead's more experimental side, it's an absorbing listen that reveals more each time the needle drops.
