Before the twin-guitar fireworks of Jailbreak, there was Nightlife, the 1974 album where Thin Lizzy's classic line-up first came together, here on limited orange vinyl as a UK import.

With Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson newly recruited alongside Phil Lynott and Brian Downey, the newly expanded band were still finding their feet, and the result is surprisingly smooth and soulful. Lynott leans into late-night moods and lyrical storytelling, revealing the romantic poet beneath the leather jacket long before the hits arrived.

"Still In Love With You" is the jewel, a slow-burning ballad that grew into one of the band's most beloved live staples. "Showdown" struts with a laid-back funk swagger, "She Knows" opens the record with chiming guitars that hint at the harmonised leads to come, and "Philomena" is Lynott's affectionate tribute to his mother.

It is a mellower Lizzy than the one that went on to conquer arenas, but that is exactly the charm: a band discovering its identity in real time, one groove at a time, with Downey's supple drumming holding it all together.

Anyone who thinks they know Thin Lizzy from the hits alone will find this album rewards a deeper dig, and the orange pressing makes it a striking companion on the shelf.
