Monk's Dream was Thelonious Monk's first album for Columbia, and this upcoming limited import on 180-gram clear vinyl adds bonus tracks to the 1963 quartet classic.
After years as a musician's musician, Monk arrived at a major label with his working band fully formed: Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, John Ore on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums. Recorded in 1962, the sessions have an easy, conversational feel, and producer Teo Macero captured them sounding relaxed and completely locked in, and the record introduced Monk's crooked, joyful genius to a far wider audience.
The title track "Monk's Dream" opens with that unmistakable lopsided swing, Rouse's tenor shadowing every angular turn of the melody. "Bye-Ya" bounces on a buoyant Latin-tinged groove, and "Bright Mississippi" turns the chords of an old standard into something gleefully Monkish. Then the band steps aside for solo piano on "Just A Gigolo", where his stride roots and dissonant flourishes sit side by side.
Dunlop's drumming deserves special mention, crisp and witty, always answering Monk's left hand with a wink of his own, while John Ore keeps the bass walking with unflappable calm.
Accessible yet endlessly surprising, it remains one of the best introductions to his music, and the clear vinyl lets that playful spirit shine through.
