Thee Oh Sees pushed their garage-psych attack into stranger, richer territory on Putrifiers II, the 2012 album that showed John Dwyer could be a composer as well as a riff machine.
Released on In the Red, the record was largely tracked by Dwyer himself, with Brigid Dawson the only other band member involved and Chris Woodhouse returning to mix and play at The Hangar in Sacramento. Guests broadened the palette considerably, with Mikal Cronin on saxophone, Heidi Alexander of The Sandwitches on vocals and trumpet, and viola from K. Dylan Edrich. Dawson has said the sessions let Dwyer stretch his wings, and that freedom is audible everywhere.
"Wax Face" kicks things off in classic fashion, a fuzz-drenched, propulsive rush that barely pauses for breath. From there the album gets more adventurous. The title track sprawls across six minutes of hypnotic drone and creeping menace, "Lupine Dominus" twists garage swagger into something eerie, and "Flood's New Light" offers a sweeter, woozier detour. Kyle Ranson's lurid cover art captures the mood perfectly.
Putrifiers II remains a high point in a famously prolific catalogue, balancing feral energy with real melodic invention. Fans of sixties psychedelia and modern garage noise will find plenty to obsess over here, and it sounds best played loud.
