Having a Rave Up with the Yardbirds, the band's 1965 American LP, puts Jeff Beck in the studio on side one and Eric Clapton on stage on side two.

Issued by Epic for the US market, where Five Live Yardbirds had never come out, it stitched brand-new studio sides together with live cuts from 1964. The result is a snapshot of a group mutating at speed, from rough R&B club act into something stranger, louder and far more adventurous. Manager Giorgio Gomelsky produced, with bassist Paul Samwell-Smith credited as musical director.

The Beck side is where the fireworks are. Heart Full of Soul swaps a planned sitar for Beck's fuzz-drenched guitar, conjuring an Eastern drone that pointed the way toward psychedelia, while Still I'm Sad turns monkish chanting into eerie, haunting pop. Their thunderous take on The Train Kept A-Rollin' would echo through hard rock for decades.

Flip it over and you're at the Marquee Club in London with Clapton, Keith Relf's wailing harmonica and a crowd that can't stand still, as the band stretch Smokestack Lightning into a hypnotic, building rave-up.

It's the rare album that captures a band's whole first act in one sitting, and a cornerstone for anyone tracing the line from British blues to heavy rock.
