The Wonder Years wrote Sister Cities after two years of touring the world, and it plays like a record about finding yourself in strangers. This pressing comes on colored vinyl with a book.
Released in 2018, the Pennsylvania band's sixth album grew out of the journal frontman Dan Campbell kept on the road and the photographs the band took along the way. Its central idea is connection, the parallels between his own life and people who seemed nothing like him. The title comes from a bus station in Santiago, Chile, where the band were stranded after a cancelled show until local fans took them in.
Producer Joe Chiccarelli recorded them at Sunset Sound, and the songs sound wider and more patient than their pop-punk roots. Raining in Kyoto opens with a slow build into a big, cathartic release, and Pyramids of Salt hits with taut, anthemic guitars. The title track is short and urgent, while The Ocean Grew Hands to Hold Me closes things with a six-minute swell that feels like the end of a very long night.
It is the band's most grown-up and generous record, full of homesickness, gratitude and hard-won perspective. Fans who came up with them will find plenty to hold onto here.
