Funk collectors have long treasured The Whole Darn Family's Has Arrived, a 1976 album that has become a cult favourite among crate-diggers and beat-makers.
Issued on the small Soul International label, the record came and went with little fanfare at the time, the fate of countless independent soul releases in the mid-seventies. Its reputation grew later, as DJs and hip-hop producers hunting for drum breaks discovered just how hard this band could groove, and reissues like this one let a new generation hear what the fuss is about.
Seven Minutes of Funk is the main attraction, a long, loose jam built on a rock-solid drum pattern and slinky bass that has been sampled many times over. You Know That You Lied opens the album with gritty vocals and a tough, driving rhythm, while Fly Away Love Bird shows the group's softer, sweet-soul side. New Yorkin' keeps the energy high with a strutting, street-level groove.
The production is raw and live-sounding, with plenty of room for the rhythm section to stretch out and lock in, and the vocals carry the rough-edged charm of a band playing for the love of it.
For anyone who loves deep funk, rare soul or the roots of hip-hop sampling, this record is a rewarding addition to the shelf.
