The Who By Numbers, the band's most candid record, returns as a limited deluxe 3LP set on 180-gram vinyl, complete with a booklet.

Released in 1975 and produced by Glyn Johns, it caught Pete Townshend at 30, wrestling with writer's block, doubts about growing old in rock and roll, and a deep weariness with the music business. Instead of another grand concept, he handed the band a set of raw, personal songs, and they recorded nearly every one. John Entwistle's connect-the-dots cover drawing hinted at the playfulness still alive underneath.

Slip Kid opens with a warning about the industry wrapped in a loping groove, and However Much I Booze is about as unflinching as Townshend ever got on record. Squeeze Box, meanwhile, became a hit single with a grin on its face, proof the band could still be mischievous while baring their souls.

The extra sides capture Who Put The Boot In, the band's 1976 show at Vetch Field, the Swansea football ground. Here the introspection gives way to full-volume catharsis, with a generous run through Tommy and a closing Won't Get Fooled Again that shows why their live reputation was so fearsome.

Studio confession on one disc and stadium thunder on the others makes for a fuller portrait of the band at a crossroads.
