Sixty years after it kicked down the doors of British rock, The Who's debut My Generation returns in a limited 60th anniversary edition on red vinyl, imported from the UK.

Released in 1965 and produced by Shel Talmy, the album caught four young mods at full sprint. Pete Townshend was writing songs about frustration and status, Roger Daltrey was learning to snarl, and the rhythm section of John Entwistle and Keith Moon was already threatening to drown everyone out. It reached number five on the UK chart and pointed the way to a louder, rawer kind of guitar music.

The title track is still the ultimate youth anthem, with Daltrey's famous stutter, Entwistle's thundering bass breaks and a closing blast of noise that felt like vandalism at the time. "The Kids Are Alright" jangles with pop sweetness, "A Legal Matter" hands the lead vocal to Townshend for a wry tale of a man on the run from marriage, and "The Ox" lets Moon go completely feral on an instrumental workout. In between, covers of James Brown and Bo Diddley show off the band's R&B roots.

Cocky and gloriously messy, this is the sound of the band that turned smashed guitars into a calling card. Red feels like the right color for a record this hot under the collar.
