Live At Leeds is The Who at full volume and full tilt, the live album many rock fans still measure all others against.

Recorded at the University of Leeds refectory in 1970 and released that same year, it caught the band at the peak of their Tommy-era touring power. The original sleeve was a cheeky joke, plain brown card with a rubber-stamped title made to look like a bootleg, at a time when illicit live tapes were everywhere. Kit Lambert and the band produced.

The original six tracks hit hard. Young Man Blues turns Mose Allison's jazz tune into a heavy, swaggering stomp, and Summertime Blues and Shakin' All Over get thunderous overhauls that make the originals sound polite. My Generation stretches out to almost a quarter of an hour, jamming through fragments of Tommy along the way before crashing to a halt.

Keith Moon plays like a hurricane, John Entwistle's bass works as a lead instrument in its own right, Pete Townshend slashes through power chords, and Roger Daltrey roars over all of it. It is loud and loose in all the right places, and the crowd's roar between songs puts you right in the hall.

More than fifty years on, it remains the gold standard for live rock records, and it still rattles the windows.
