The Who's second album, A Quick One, marks its 60th anniversary on two LPs pressed in green and orange vinyl, a fitting splash of colour for a pop-art classic.

Released in 1966 and produced by Kit Lambert, the record caught the band between their explosive mod singles and the grand ambitions to come. A publishing deal nudged every member into songwriting, so alongside Pete Townshend's material you get John Entwistle's darkly comic Boris the Spider, plus contributions from Roger Daltrey and Keith Moon that show just how many personalities were crammed into one band.

Run Run Run opens the album at a gallop, and So Sad About Us remains one of Townshend's finest power-pop moments, later covered by The Jam among others. The real landmark is the closing A Quick One, While He's Away, which stitches six short sections into a nine-minute mini-opera and points straight towards Tommy.

Alan Aldridge's colourful cover art set the visual tone, and the music still bristles with mischief and invention. Sixty years on, it remains essential listening for anyone tracing how The Who became The Who, and this anniversary double vinyl is a lively, colourful way to hear a young band discovering how far it could push the format.
