Life, Death and Dennis Hopper is Mike Scott's most ambitious Waterboys project in years, a sprawling 25-song concept album about one of Hollywood's great wild men, pressed here as a colored 2LP set.
The band's 16th studio album arrived in 2025, and it follows Hopper from small-town Kansas through Rebel Without a Cause, Easy Rider and the turbulent decades that followed. Scott tells the story in chapters, with songs for each of Hopper's wives and portraits of the friends, rivals and hangers-on who orbited him, so the record plays like a rock-and-roll biography you can drop the needle on anywhere.
The guest list is remarkable. Steve Earle brings dusty gravel to the opening "Kansas", Bruce Springsteen lends his weathered voice to "Ten Years Gone", and Fiona Apple adds a haunting presence to "Letter From An Unknown Girlfriend". Around them, The Waterboys swing between Big Music grandeur, rootsy rock and cinematic storytelling, with plenty of swagger and wry humor along the way.
It is a big swing of a record, part history lesson, part fever dream, and wholly committed to its larger-than-life subject. For fans who have followed Scott from This Is the Sea to now, it is proof that his romantic, restless spirit has never dimmed, and that he still has grand ideas to chase.
