Before Slave Ambient and the arena-sized highs of later years, The War on Drugs made Future Weather, a hazy eight-track EP from 2010 pressed on a single LP.

Adam Granduciel was reshaping the band at the time. Wagonwheel Blues had introduced his love of drifting, Dylan-inflected Americana in 2008, and the songs that followed pointed somewhere far more expansive. Working with bassist Dave Hartley and drummer Mike Zanghi, he produced the record himself, stacking guitars, synthesizers, harmonica and cassette textures into something that feels both homemade and enormous.

Baby Missiles is the obvious hook, a propulsive, headlong rush that the band would later rework for Slave Ambient. Brothers stretches out over five minutes of warm, rolling motion, and Comin' Through has the restless, road-bound energy that would become a Granduciel signature. The History of Plastic closes the set with eight minutes of slow-burning, shoegazing haze, the kind of drifting atmosphere his later albums would build into whole landscapes of sound.

For listeners who found the band through Lost in the Dream or A Deeper Understanding, Future Weather is the missing link, the moment the blueprint snapped into focus. Short, generous and endlessly replayable, it rewards anyone who likes to drop the needle and let the fog roll in.
