After two albums of feedback and fury, The Velvet Underground turned the lights down low for their 1969 self-titled record, back here as a 45th anniversary edition.

John Cale was gone, replaced by Doug Yule, and Lou Reed steered the band toward hushed, intimate songs about love, faith and loneliness. Released on MGM, the album sold modestly at the time, yet it went on to become a quiet touchstone for generations of indie and alternative songwriters who prized its honesty over noise.

"Candy Says" opens the record with Yule singing Reed's tender portrait of Candy Darling, setting a mood of gentle, almost confessional vulnerability. "Pale Blue Eyes" ranks among the most heartbreaking ballads Reed ever wrote, while "What Goes On" brings back the band's chugging drive with ringing organ and endlessly repeating guitar.

The album closes with "After Hours," sung by Maureen Tucker in a shy, sweet voice that sounds like a lullaby for the last people left in the bar. Between those moments, songs about grace and redemption sit alongside sly, sideways rock and roll.

It is the warmest and most human record the band ever made, and this anniversary edition is a lovely way to hear the softer side of rock's great outsiders.
