The Temptations' Cloud Nine is the sound of Motown's smoothest vocal group plugging into psychedelia and never looking back.

Released in 1969, it was the first Temptations album to feature Dennis Edwards, who had stepped in for the departed David Ruffin, and it marked producer Norman Whitfield's bold new direction for the group. Working with lyricist Barrett Strong, Whitfield traded sweet romance for wah-wah guitars, stretched-out grooves and songs that looked hard at the world outside the studio door.

The title track sets the template, a funky, swirling take on escape and its costs, while Runaway Child, Running Wild unfolds into a nine-minute odyssey of percussion, tension and release. Their version of I Heard It Through the Grapevine brings those famous harmonies to a song Whitfield knew inside out.

The second side keeps a foot in classic soul, with tight, romantic numbers that remind you this was still the group behind so many perfect singles. That contrast is part of the thrill, the sound of a band standing confidently in two eras at once and mastering both.

This reissue presents a landmark of psychedelic soul just as it was first sequenced, and it remains the ideal place to start exploring the Temptations' adventurous late-1960s run.
