What You Don't See packs eleven songs into barely half an hour, and The Story So Far's second album hits as hard on marble vinyl as it did in 2013.
The Walnut Creek, California band had built a fierce reputation with their debut, Under Soil and Dirt, and this follow-up sharpened every edge. Recorded at The Panda Studios with producer Sam Pura and New Found Glory's Steve Klein, it captured the sound of a band at full sprint with no interest in wasting a second.
Parker Cannon's lyrics spit frustration and self-recrimination over guitars that churn and lurch rather than simply chug. "Things I Can't Change" opens the album in a burst of bitterness, "Empty Space" pairs a huge hook with a gut-punch of loneliness, and "Right Here", the lead single, turns heartbreak into a full-throttle singalong.
The drums hit with real weight, and the production keeps everything raw enough to feel live while giving the hooks room to land. Even the quieter moments carry a coiled tension, as if the whole band is waiting for the next chorus to explode.
More than a decade on, it remains a touchstone of modern pop-punk, the kind of record fans still shout back word for word at shows.
