My Girl Hates My Heroin digs into the Stooges at their most dangerous, a collection of 1973 Detroit recordings on limited red and black splatter vinyl.
By 1973 Iggy Pop had rebuilt the band around guitarist James Williamson, with Ron Asheton switched to bass and his brother Scott still pounding the drums. Raw Power had come and gone without the success it deserved, and the group was spiralling through drugs, debt and chaotic gigs. These recordings, first collected in France in 1989, capture that volatile stretch when the songs were sharper than ever and the band was barely holding together.
The title track is a ragged, sneering blast that never got a proper studio release at the time. Cock In My Pocket and Head On come from the last batch of songs the group was working up, while Search And Destroy and Gimme Danger revisit Raw Power with a grittier edge.
This is raw, unvarnished material, with Williamson's guitar slashing through the mix and Iggy howling like a man possessed. Nothing is tidied up, and that is precisely the appeal.
For fans who already own the classic albums, it is a thrilling look behind the curtain at a band inventing punk in real time, years before anyone had a name for it.
