The SteelDrivers' Bad for You opens a new chapter for the Nashville bluegrass outfit, introducing Kelvin Damrell as lead singer on a hard-hitting single LP from 2020.

Few bluegrass bands carry this kind of lineage. The group's early records featured Chris Stapleton out front before his solo career took off, and Gary Nichols carried the torch through the years that followed. When Damrell stepped in, the challenge was keeping that bluesy, soul-soaked edge intact, and this album answers it with grit to spare. Tammy Rogers on fiddle, Richard Bailey on banjo, Mike Fleming on bass and Brent Truitt on mandolin round out a band that plays like a finely tuned engine.

The title track sets the tone, while The Bartender spins a barroom tale with a wry, weary eye. 12 O'Clock Blues leans fully into the band's blues roots, as its name promises, and When a Heart Breaks brings the record home. Damrell's voice is the revelation throughout, gravelly and gospel-tinged, the kind that can sell heartbreak and danger in the same breath.
