The Aeroplane Flies High gathers The Smashing Pumpkins' five Mellon Collie singles and their many B-sides into a 180-gram 5LP deluxe box set, reissued for the collection's 30th anniversary.

First released in 1996, the box was a fan's dream long before expanded reissues became routine. Each disc took one single from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and filled it out with outtakes, covers and experiments, catching Billy Corgan and the band at their most prolific and restless. Five records, 33 tracks, and very little that feels like leftovers.

The singles are familiar ground, from the snarl of Bullet With Butterfly Wings to the wistful glide of 1979. The real treasure sits on the flip sides. Set The Ray To Jerry rides a hypnotic, looping groove, and The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right) stretches into a slow-burning epic of fuzz and drift.

Covers of The Cars, Blondie and The Cure show off the band's record-collection roots, while gentle acoustic sketches sit right beside heavy, distorted workouts. Heard together, these sides reveal a band with ideas to burn.

It rewards the listener who always flips to the B-side first, and three decades on, these songs still feel like secrets worth passing around.
