CYR finds The Smashing Pumpkins trading wall-of-guitar bombast for gleaming synthesizers, a 2020 left turn that Billy Corgan wrote, produced and steered with real conviction.

The album arrived two years after Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1, the record that brought Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin back into the studio together. Rather than repeat the nineties, the band went somewhere new: a sprawling twenty-song set built on drum machines, pulsing keyboards and gothic new wave moods, paired with In Ashes, an animated series that doubled as a run of official videos.

The Colour of Love opens the record with a rush of synth bass and Corgan's familiar sneer softened into something almost romantic. The title track glides on a cold, propulsive pulse, and Confessions of a Dopamine Addict leans into eighties-style melodrama, all shimmering hooks and brooding atmosphere.

Backing vocalists Katie Cole and Sierra Swan add a glossy, choral sheen across the record, while Jeff Schroeder and Iha's guitars hover in the mix rather than dominate it, and Chamberlin's drumming keeps the machines feeling human. It is a polarising record by design, and that boldness is part of its appeal.

For fans who love the band's more electronic side, from Adore onward, CYR is a bold, glittering chapter that rewards hearing in full.
