The Best of the Runaways bottles the snarl of the teenage band that kicked open rock's doors for women in the 1970s.
Formed in Los Angeles in 1975 under the guidance of producer and svengali Kim Fowley, the group featured Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Sandy West and Jackie Fox, and their blend of glam stomp, hard rock riffs and punk attitude made them a sensation, especially in Japan. First issued in 1987, this collection gathers 13 tracks from their brief but explosive run, including a pair of live recordings.
"Cherry Bomb", with Currie's sneering vocal and that chant-along chorus, remains their signature anthem. "Queens of Noise" arrives here in a raw live version, while "School Days" and "Born to Be Bad" show how quickly the band toughened up, with Ford's guitar work getting sharper and heavier along the way. Sandy West's drumming drives everything with a no-nonsense punch.
Jett and Ford went on to major solo careers, but this is where it all started: loud, young and gloriously unpolished.
It is the quickest route into a band whose influence on punk and hard rock still echoes, and a great starting point for anyone tracing the roots of riot grrrl.
