The Rolling Stones' "Sweet Sounds of Heaven" gets the collector treatment here: a limited 10-inch single with the song on one side and an etching on the other, imported from the UK.
The track was the second single from Hackney Diamonds, the 2023 album that gave fans the band's first collection of new original songs since A Bigger Bang in 2005. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and produced by Andrew Watt, it grew out of a gospel-tinged piano idea Jagger had worked up at home in London.
Watt suggested bringing in Stevie Wonder, who added piano, Fender Rhodes and Moog bass, and Lady Gaga came on board spontaneously while she was recording in a neighbouring studio. With Steve Jordan on drums, the song builds patiently over seven minutes, from a hushed, churchy opening to a full-throated vocal duel between Jagger and Gaga. Gospel, soul and blues all feed into it, and the lyrics touch on poverty, nationalism and mortality without ever losing their sense of uplift.
Critics widely singled it out as the standout of the album, and that thrilling vocal interplay is the reason why. With a single song and a decorative etched B-side, this 10-inch is a keepsake for Stones collectors rather than a full listening session, and a striking one at that.
