Not Ready for Prime Time catches The Replacements live at Chicago's Cabaret Metro in 1986, a ragged, roaring double LP from the band's original lineup.

The Minneapolis band were riding high on Tim, their first major label album, and a week after this show they would stumble through their notorious Saturday Night Live appearance. This set gives a far better picture of what they could do on a good night. Paul Westerberg, Bob Stinson, Tommy Stinson and Chris Mars tear through 28 songs with all the chaos and heart that made them heroes of the American underground, swinging from punk fury to moments of startling tenderness.

Bastards of Young lands with full-throated fury, while Unsatisfied turns into a howl of frustration that still stings decades later. I Will Dare bounces along with jangly, lovelorn charm, a reminder that beneath all the noise lay some of the finest songwriting of the decade. Bob Stinson's wild, unpredictable lead guitar is all over the set, a vivid snapshot of what the band lost when he departed later that year.

First released as part of an expanded Tim reissue, the recording now stands on its own across four sides. It's a loud, loose document of a great band at full tilt, and a fine reason to turn the volume up.
