Strobe lights, breakbeats and pure chaos fuel The Prodigy's Experience, the 1992 debut that bottled the energy of Britain's rave explosion, here on two LPs.
Before Liam Howlett turned the band into a snarling crossover act, The Prodigy were an Essex rave outfit with Howlett at the controls and Keith Flint, Leeroy Thornhill and Maxim bringing the stage show. Released on XL Recordings, the album captured the hardcore scene at its most euphoric, all sped-up breaks, sirens and piano stabs designed to keep warehouses moving until dawn.
Jericho opens the record with a blast of ragga-flavoured breakbeat urgency, setting the tempo for everything that follows. Out of Space famously builds its playful, bouncing groove around a sample of Max Romeo's Chase the Devil, while Everybody in the Place is a rush of rolling drums and hands-in-the-air piano. Fire borrows its famous shout from Arthur Brown and hints at the darker, heavier sound Howlett would explore next.
What makes it hold up is Howlett's ear for hooks. Even at its most frantic, the record is packed with melodies and sound effects that stick in your head long after the music stops.
It is the sound of a band and a scene in full bloom, and the first chapter of a story that would soon take over the world.
