The Pretty Reckless announced themselves with a snarl on Light Me Up, the 2010 debut that turned Taylor Momsen from screen actor into a genuine rock frontwoman.

Momsen was still a teenager when the band made this record, and the grit in her voice caught plenty of doubters off guard from the very first listen. Working with the late producer Kato Khandwala, the band built their sound on heavy, bluesy riffs and big alt-rock hooks, all filtered through a swagger that owed more to 90s grunge than to anything on the pop charts of the day.

Make Me Wanna Die is the calling card, a brooding single that remains a fan favourite and the song that broke the band. My Medicine kicks the door in as the opener, Miss Nothing struts with a dark, sneering edge, and Just Tonight shows they could handle anthemic heartbreak every bit as convincingly as the heavier material.

Sixteen years on, Light Me Up still sounds like a band with something to prove, and the success of later records only makes this starting point more satisfying to revisit. Returning to vinyl, it is the place where the whole story begins, loud and very sure of itself, with Momsen already in full command.
