Forty years on, Rum Sodomy & The Lash returns as a 2LP anniversary edition, pairing The Pogues' 1985 masterpiece with a full disc of extras.

Their second album, produced by Elvis Costello, captured the band at their wildest and most poetic. Shane MacGowan's songs fused Irish folk traditions with punk spirit, painting vivid pictures of drink, war, emigration and London's backstreets, while the band played with a ragged, reeling energy that no one else could match.

A Pair of Brown Eyes shows MacGowan at his most brilliant, all rough charm and heartbreaking detail. The band's take on Ewan MacColl's Dirty Old Town became a signature, and And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda turns Eric Bogle's anti-war ballad into an aching, eight-minute epic.

The second LP gathers single B-sides, the Poguetry in Motion EP with its much-loved A Rainy Night in Soho, a BBC Radio 1 session from 1985, live recordings from Glasgow Barrowland and a rough mix of a Lovin' Spoonful cover. It's a generous haul that fills in the story of a remarkable year for the band.

Taken together, it's a beautifully rounded portrait of The Pogues at their peak, and a reminder of why this album still gets played loud at closing time.
