Shane MacGowan's gang of London-Irish misfits crashed into 1984 with Red Roses for Me, a debut that grabbed Irish folk by the collar and dragged it through punk's back alleys.

The Pogues had cut their teeth in London pubs, and this debut for Stiff caught them raw and rowdy, with Stan Brennan producing. MacGowan's own songs, gutter hymns about drink, brawls and low life, sit shoulder to shoulder with traditional tunes the band tore into like they owed them money. Nobody had mixed the two in quite that way before, and plenty of bands have chased the formula since.

Transmetropolitan opens at a gallop, a breakneck lap of London with Jem Finer's banjo and Spider Stacy's tin whistle racing James Fearnley's accordion to the finish. Streams of Whiskey is MacGowan at his most gloriously unrepentant, while Dark Streets of London trades the sprint for a lurching, lamplit swagger. Boys from the County Hell brings the menace, all clattering drums from Andrew Ranken and Cait O'Riordan's thudding bass.

The old songs get roughed up here, but never mocked. Underneath the noise and the spilled pints there is real affection for the music they grew up around.

Rum Sodomy & the Lash would sharpen the vision a year later, but this is where the spit and sawdust started.
