Now Playing packs The Notorious B.I.G.'s biggest records onto a single LP, ten tracks that explain exactly why Brooklyn still claims him as its king.

In just a few short years, Christopher Wallace changed what a rapper could sound like, pairing an effortless, conversational flow with vivid storytelling and a sense of humour sharp enough to cut glass. Two studio albums, Ready to Die and Life After Death, were all it took, and this set draws from both alongside key singles from that remarkable run.

"Juicy" remains the ultimate rags-to-riches anthem, a warm, nostalgic look back at his come-up that still sounds like a victory lap. "Big Poppa" is pure smooth-talking charm, while "Hypnotize" struts over a slinky, irresistible groove with Biggie at his most effortlessly cool.

The darker, more technical side gets its moment too. "Notorious Thugs" finds him matching Bone Thugs-n-Harmony at their own rapid-fire game, a reminder that the laid-back delivery hid a fearsome technician. Across both sides, the collection swings from party records to grim street tales without missing a beat.

For newer fans it is the perfect starting point, and for longtime listeners it is a handy single disc of essentials for the shelf, one that makes a strong case for Biggie as one of the finest storytellers hip-hop has produced.
