Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan have been refining their two-voice, two-guitar folk since the early 2010s, and this seventh studio album, released through Far Cry Records with Thirty Tigers, extends that minimalism rather than abandoning it. Pattengale produced and mixed the record, keeping the arrangements rootsy and uncluttered so the harmonies stay front and centre.
Opener "Blue Water" sets the tone with a carefully picked banjo, used for quiet colour rather than speed, as the lyric follows a man by a river remembering the child who once slept on his chest. "A Friend Like You" and "I'll Go Home From Here" previewed the album and show the same patience, while the title track "Lost Cause Lover Fool" sits at the heart of the sequence.
Nine songs keep the running time lean, and the restraint is the point. Every pause and every breath between the two voices matters, and the quieter the arrangement gets, the more the details come into focus.
