Ray Davies swapped wistful English nostalgia for loud guitars and sharp headlines on Low Budget, the 1979 album that turned The Kinks into an American arena draw.
Recorded between Konk Studios in London and New York, with Davies producing, it was the band's leanest, hardest-hitting record in years and the first to feature bassist Jim Rodford. America ate it up, making it their best-selling studio album, even as Britain largely looked the other way.
Davies points his pen squarely at the late seventies, with inflation, strikes and the energy crisis all getting the treatment. A Gallon of Gas is a bluesy grumble about life at the pump, and the title track is a strutting, self-mocking anthem for anyone living on cut-price everything.
(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman, written at Arista boss Clive Davis's urging for a radio hit, adds a disco pulse that still divides fans, while Catch Me Now I'm Falling turns a fading hero's plea for help into a stadium-sized rocker. Dave Davies' guitar crackles through the whole thing.
Punchy, funny and a little bitter, it's the sound of a veteran band rediscovering its teeth. Six of these songs would soon power the double live album One for the Road.
