Fresh from conquering American arenas, The Kinks cranked up the amps for Give the People What They Want, a 1981 album pairing big guitars with Ray Davies' sharpest jabs at modern life.

Recorded at the band's own Konk Studios in London, with Davies producing, it followed the success of Low Budget and the double live set One for the Road. Davies had his eye on the television age, and the songs take aim at mass media and the hunger for sensation, with a sly sense of humour running through it all.

Around the Dial opens with a riff-heavy search for a favourite radio DJ who has vanished from the airwaves, and the title track is a snarling satire of the public appetite for violence on screen. Destroyer cheekily recycles one of the band's most famous sixties riffs, winking at its own history.

The guitars are loud and the hooks are big, with Dave Davies' playing crackling all over the record. Then it closes with Better Things, one of the most quietly hopeful songs Ray ever wrote, a warm farewell that sends you off smiling.

It's a confident, punchy entry from the band's arena years, and Better Things remains one of their loveliest closers.
