The Killers' Sam's Town turns 20 with a limited anniversary edition on 180 gram red smoke vinyl, a fitting colour for a record soaked in desert dust and casino neon.

Released in 2006, the second album saw Brandon Flowers and company trade some of Hot Fuss's British new wave gloss for something bigger and more American. Produced with Flood and Alan Moulder and recorded at Studio at the Palms in Las Vegas, it drew comparisons to Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run, an influence the band wore proudly. Anton Corbijn shot the striking cover.

When You Were Young is the obvious anthem, all galloping drums, chiming guitars and wide-open longing. Read My Mind might be the band's most quietly devastating song, Bones swaggers in with horns and a wink, and For Reasons Unknown adds a dusty, heartland charge that sounds made for a long highway.

Bookended by the title track and a short closing coda, it plays as a full statement about home, ambition and the pull of the open road.

Two decades on, its big-hearted ambition holds up beautifully, and this pressing will give longtime fans a handsome way to hear it again, loud and front to back, the way it was meant to be heard.
