The Japanese House's Good at Falling arrives as a 2LP UK import, the 2019 debut album where Amber Bain stepped out from behind the haze of her early EPs.
Bain had spent several years releasing EPs on Dirty Hit, building a cult following with songs that hid her voice under layers of processing. For her first full-length she worked with producers BJ Burton and George Daniel, and the result is clearer, warmer and far more exposed. It is a record about falling in love, falling apart and trying to understand which one is happening at any given moment.
Maybe You're the Reason glides on bright, melancholy synth-pop, a breezy melody wrapped around lyrics full of doubt. Lilo is softer and more fragile, an aching reflection on a relationship that refuses to fade, while We Talk All the Time pairs a skipping beat with a wistful, circling chorus. Follow My Girl adds a playful bounce without losing the bittersweet undertow.
Small, clever details fill every corner: pitched and stacked vocals, glassy guitars and electronic textures that shimmer like light through a window. Bain's voice sits in the middle of it all, honest and unguarded.
Glossy on the surface and bruised underneath, it is a record that rewards a late-night listen with the lights down.
