Being Boiled is where The Human League began, a cold, strange and thrilling debut single that helped sketch the blueprint for British synth pop. This limited 12-inch comes on red vinyl with a white swirl, as a UK import.

Recorded in Sheffield in 1978, it came together in an abandoned factory on a domestic tape recorder for the princely sum of £2.50, with Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh building the music and Philip Oakey writing the words. It first appeared on the independent Fast Product label, and when Virgin reissued it in 1982 on the back of Dare, it climbed to number six in the UK.

Oakey's deadpan baritone delivers some of the most gloriously odd lyrics of the era, with silkworms, Buddha and stern instruction set against a stomping, metallic synth line. Flip it over and Circus Of Death keeps the menace going, an eerie, cinematic B-side that shows how far ahead of the curve the band already were.

Ware and Marsh would soon leave to form Heaven 17, and Oakey would steer the group to global pop success, but this record is the seed it all grew from.

Pressed as a 12-inch, it is a small record with a very long shadow and an essential stop for anyone tracing electronic pop back to its source.
