Live at Neumos (2011) catches The Head and the Heart on home turf just as Seattle was falling for them, pressed on clear 2LP with a poster.
Only a couple of years earlier, the group had been selling self-burned copies of their debut at shows in handmade denim sleeves. By 2011 Sub Pop had signed them and reissued that record, and nights like this one at Neumos, a mainstay of the Capitol Hill club scene, were turning local word of mouth into something much bigger. Released in 2026, fifteen years on, it plays like a time capsule.
The setlist leans on those early songs, and they sound wonderfully alive. "Lost in My Mind" swells from a gentle shuffle into a full-throated singalong, "Down in the Valley" glows with close harmonies and rolling piano, and "Rivers and Roads" builds into the kind of cathartic finale that made it their traditional closer. There is also the original "Long Time Away" and a spirited run through Jimmie Rodgers' "T Is For Texas (Blue Yodel No. 1)".
The recording keeps the warmth of the room intact, from the creak of acoustic guitars to the joy of a band discovering what it had.
For longtime fans, this is the closest thing to having been there.
