The Head and the Heart's Let's Be Still returns as a gold 2LP reissue, a warm-hearted second album from the Seattle band that turned front-porch harmonies into something grand.
After their homemade debut caught fire, the group came back in 2013 with a record made very much on their own terms. Recorded in Seattle and produced by the band with Shawn Simmons, it marked the first time they had produced as a full band, and every member's influences show through.
"Homecoming Heroes" and "Another Story" open the album with sturdy folk-rock bones and stories of the people and places left behind on the road. "Shake", the lead single, picks up the pace with a stomping rhythm and a chorus made for clapping along, while the title track settles into a gentle, swaying calm that has soundtracked plenty of television moments since. Charity Rose Thielen's voice and violin weave through it all, adding sweetness and grit to the band's trademark group vocals.
The arrangements are fuller than before, with piano, strings and layered harmonies giving the songs room to stretch out across four sides.
For fans who fell for the band's earnest, open-hearted sound, the gold pressing is a fitting way to revisit a record that still glows.
