The Growlers' Chinese Fountain arrives as a deluxe edition on magenta vinyl in a gatefold jacket, a vivid showcase for one of the band's sharpest sets of songs.
The Southern California band had dubbed their woozy blend of surf, psych, country and garage rock "beach goth", and built a cult following around it. On this 2014 album they cleaned up the haze without losing the charm, tightening the grooves and putting Brooks Nielsen's drawling, world-weary vocals right up front. The result feels both breezier and more pointed than anything they had made before.
The title track "Chinese Fountain" rides a loose, irresistible shuffle, while "Going Gets Tough" turns hard times into a strutting, sunny singalong. "Black Memories" leans into the band's darker, moodier side, and "Love Test" bounces along on jangling guitars and a hook that refuses to leave. Throughout, the playing is relaxed but precise, the kind of easy swagger that sounds simple and is anything but, with Nielsen crooning like a lounge singer who wandered in from the beach.
It is a record for long drives up the coast, late barbecues and lazy Sunday afternoons with the windows open. In magenta, it looks every bit as sunburnt and colourful as it sounds.
