Ten years after The '59 Sound made The Gaslight Anthem New Jersey's favourite heartbreakers, The '59 Sound Sessions opened the vault, here as a limited deluxe gatefold LP.
Released in 2018 to mark the anniversary, it gathers rare, unreleased and alternate takes from the sessions that produced the band's second album. The original record, produced by Ted Hutt, turned Brian Fallon's Springsteen-sized romanticism into anthems for anyone who ever drove around at night with the windows down and the radio up. These recordings catch that same spirit from a different angle, closer to the band working it out in the room.
Familiar songs like the title track and "Great Expectations" sit beside material that stayed in the drawer for a decade. "Placeholder" and "Our Father's Sons" were previously unreleased, and both fit the album's mood of nostalgia, heartbreak and working-class stubbornness. There's also a rare run at "God's Gonna Cut You Down," the traditional warning song Johnny Cash made his own, which suits Fallon's gravelly preacher side perfectly.
For anyone who wore out the original, this is the scrapbook: same songs, same summer, a different light. It's packed with grit and heart, and a reminder of how good this band sounded in 2008.
