The Gaslight Anthem's Sink or Swim is where the New Brunswick band first put their hearts on the line, a ragged, romantic punk debut with Springsteen in its bloodstream.

Released in 2007 on the small XOXO label, it arrived with little fanfare from the mainstream press but quickly won over independent critics and punk fans hungry for something with more soul. The band produced it themselves alongside engineer Josh Jakubowski, and the record has the urgency of a group playing every song as if it might be their last shot.

Brian Fallon's gravelly voice and nostalgic, cinematic lyrics are already fully formed. "I'da Called You Woody, Joe" tips its hat to Joe Strummer with scrappy affection, "We Came to Dance" is a bittersweet barnburner, and "1930" pulls a sense of old-world romance into a modern punk frame. "Wooderson," named for the Dazed and Confused character, is pure bar-band swagger.

There is plenty of Jersey punk grit in the guitars, but the melodies point toward classic heartland rock, a balance that would soon make The '59 Sound a breakout.

For fans who came aboard later, this LP is a vital look at the band's beginnings, and its best songs still burn as bright as anything they recorded afterwards.
