The Gaslight Anthem's Get Hurt is the New Jersey band's boldest left turn, a 2014 album that traded jukebox romance for heavier, darker ground.

After four albums of heartland punk and nostalgic sing-alongs, Brian Fallon and his bandmates wanted to shake things up. Fallon was working through the end of his marriage, and the band headed to Blackbird Studios in Nashville with producer Mike Crossey to chase a different sound. They pointed to career-shifting records like Pearl Jam's No Code as inspiration, and it shows in the fuzzier guitars, moodier textures and willingness to let a song simmer rather than explode.

Stay Vicious kicks the door in with a grinding, heavy riff, and the title track turns heartbreak into a slow, smoldering confession. 1,000 Years keeps one foot in the band's anthemic past, while Rollin' and Tumblin' rides a driving, radio-ready chorus that would have fit on any of their earlier records. Fallon sings with raw, unguarded honesty throughout, and the band sound hungrier and more restless than their polished reputation might suggest.

Get Hurt debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and remains the band's most intriguing record, the sound of a group willing to risk its own formula. On a single LP, it plays as one bruised, cohesive statement.
