Atlanta's The Funeral Portrait went home to throw a party, and Live From Suffocate City is the proof, a sweaty, theatrical concert album pressed as a lime and black double LP on 140-gram vinyl with a poster.
The band formed in 2014 and spent years grinding before Greetings From Suffocate City and its lead single "Suffocate City", with Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills, reached number one on the US Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Their first live album captures the victory lap: a sold-out hometown show at The Masquerade, billed as the first Suffocate City Town Hall Meeting, with frontman Lee Jennings leading the charge in front of a home crowd.
The setlist leans hard on the hits and the deep cuts fans scream back. "Generation Psycho" kicks things off at full tilt, "You're So Ugly When You Cry" turns heartbreak into a singalong, and "Voodoo Doll" and "Dark Thoughts" bring the big, glossy emo hooks with extra grit. "Suffocate City" arrives near the end as the night's crowning moment, the song that turned a cult band into a radio fixture.
It is loud and theatrical, very much a document of a band at the peak of a breakout. For fans who were there, it is a souvenir; for everyone else, it is the best seat in the house.
