Despite the title, The Frights made a record that is very easy to love, and You Are Going To Hate This comes back here on red and yellow splatter vinyl.
The band started out in Poway, near San Diego, playing scrappy surf punk with a soft spot for doo-wop melodies. By their second album, released in 2016 on Dangerbird, singer Mikey Carnevale, bassist Richard Dotson and drummer Marc Finn had sharpened the hooks without sanding off the snot. FIDLAR frontman Zac Carper produced, and he knew exactly how loud and loose to keep things.
All I Need kicks the record off with fuzzy, shout-along energy, and Kids follows with the kind of scrappy, hook-first punk the band does best. Afraid Of The Dark keeps the momentum high, and Puppy Knuckles, first heard on one of their early singles, gets a proper home here.
Underneath the noise there is plenty of heart. Carnevale sings about growing up and young love with a self-deprecating wit, and the band swings easily between sun-bleached surf riffs, garage punk thrash and sweet, almost fifties-style harmonies.
It is a snapshot of a band right as they found their voice, and the splatter pressing suits a record this colourful.
