A Light That Waits marks a fresh start for The Fray, the band's first full-length album in twelve years and their first since frontman Isaac Slade stepped away.

After Slade's departure in 2022, the Denver group carried on as a trio, with Joe King moving to lead vocals alongside Ben Wysocki and Dave Welsh. For the first time, the three wrote together from scratch, working out of Wysocki's studio in Denver and co-producing with Jason Suwito and Ryan Linvill. King has said the title grew out of learning to listen to themselves and to one another.

The big-hearted, anthemic sound that once made the band a radio fixture is still here, but the mood is looser and more reflective. My Heart's a Crowded Room, Emerald and Songs I'd Rather Not Sing, all shared ahead of the album, show off a band comfortable with quieter moments and plain-spoken lyrics.

The title track opens the album on a note of hope that runs through everything that follows, and King's voice gives these songs a warm, earnest colour of its own.

For longtime fans it's a welcome return, and for newcomers a chance to meet a band rediscovering itself, two decades after it first broke through.
