The Four Tops slowed the tempo and deepened the mood on Still Waters Run Deep, a 1970 Motown album that plays like one continuous, reflective suite.
With Holland-Dozier-Holland gone from Motown, the group teamed with producer Frank Wilson, who steered them toward a conceptual, almost meditative sound. It was a bold step for a vocal group famous for urgent, pleading hits, and it pointed toward the album-minded soul that would shape the decade ahead.
The bookends "Still Water (Love)" and "Still Water (Peace)" frame the record with Levi Stubbs at his most restrained, his famous roar held in reserve until it really counts. In between, the group reworks "Reflections," turns "It's All in the Game" into a lush, unhurried showcase, and finds fresh feeling in songs borrowed from the folk-pop songbook of the day.
Lyrically, it's a record about calm, understanding and love as a remedy for a restless time, and the arrangements match that intent with soft strings, patient grooves and the Tops' gorgeous four-part harmonies blending like a single voice. Nothing is rushed, and every song flows into the next.
