Before Nate Ruess found massive fame with fun., he and Sam Means made Interventions + Lullabies as The Format, pressed here on Easter Yellow and Cyan Blue vinyl.
Released in 2003 on Elektra, the Arizona duo's debut is a bright, big-hearted mix of power pop and indie rock with a theatrical streak, produced by R. Walt Vincent. It never yielded a major hit, yet it found a loyal audience that has kept it close ever since, and plenty of listeners found their way back to it after Ruess's later success.
"The First Single" opens with a wink and a huge chorus, Ruess's elastic tenor already making the theatrical leaps that would later make him famous. "Tie the Rope" and "Wait, Wait, Wait" keep the energy high and the melodies sticky, while the longer "On Your Porch" gives the album room to breathe.
Means's arrangements bring warmth and detail throughout, with jangling guitars, bright keys and stacked harmonies made for singing along in a packed club, and Ruess sounds thrilled to be there.
For anyone who loves early-2000s indie pop with its heart on its sleeve, this colorful reissue is a fine way to revisit where it all began for Ruess and Means.
