Force M.D.'s bridged doo-wop harmony and early hip-hop swagger, and Let Me Love You: The Greatest Hits gathers that story on two colored 140 gram LPs.
The Staten Island group began as a street troupe, singing and beatboxing for crowds around New York before Tommy Boy signed them in 1984. Their mix of tight vocal harmonies, rapping and drum machine grooves made them an unusual act on a label known for electro and rap, and the hits came quickly. First compiled in 2001, this collection follows their run from those early singles into the 1990s.
"Let Me Love You" and "Forgive Me Girl" show the street-corner roots, stacked harmonies floating over spare electronic beats. "Tears" turned that formula into their first big hit, while "Tender Love", penned by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and featured in the film Krush Groove, became the crossover slow jam that has been covered many times since. "Love Is a House" brought them an R&B number one, a polished late-1980s groove that still glides.
Seventeen tracks across two discs, including the playful "Force M.D.'s Meet the Fat Boys", make this a complete portrait of a group that sat right where R&B and hip-hop first started sharing a stage. Few acts made street-corner harmony sound so at home next to a drum machine.
